Photoshop Tip

So you've burned a set of underwater image CDs but how can you, at a glance, know what images are where?
As many of you have requested here are the steps for creating a contact sheet for each CD Jewel Case.

You will use Photoshop's Contact Sheet II to create your Jewel Case.

Step One

Go to the File menu, under Automate, and choose Contact Sheet II.  This brings up the Contact Sheet II dialog.

Step Two

In the Source Images section, select Folder in the Use pop-up menu, then click on the Browse button and navigate to your CD of underwater images.  Choose all by clicking CTRL+A.

Step Three
The remainder of the Contact Sheet II dialog is where you design your layout. Under the Document section, enter the width and height of your jewel box cover. Jewel cases are 4.75 x 4.75 inches. I use* 4.50 x 4.50 to avoid any borderless/margin requirements. For resolution I choose 150ppi. That is because thumbnails are small to begin with; they don't need to be a high resolution. Leave the Mode RGB Color and choose to Flatten All Layers to avoid a large multilayered document.

*Your printer might not be able to print borderless.

Step Four
The Thumbnails section is  where you choose the layout. Adobe grids out a preview box allowing you to see the layout in advance.  Start with a 6x6 grid and use Use Filename As Caption box checked. That way you will always be able to identify your image.  I also recommend you leave the font size set to 6 points to fit long file names.

Step Five
Simply depress OK and grab a cup of coffee. Photoshop will build your contact sheet, image at a time, until done. Inspect it.

Step Six (Optional)
If you have vertical format images you may want to experiment with the Use Auto-Spacing checkbox. Some prefer a tight fit to the grid lying verticals on their side. Others prefer to see their verticals upright. Experiment and choose your own preference.

Step Seven
Your Contact Sheet is ready to print with a  terrific white border around the edges.  Next time your looking for that particular image, you can find which CD at a glance.
